1. 1997 — The Beginning

Our container operations began on 24 September 1997, when the feeder vessel M/S Marianne called Fredericia for the very first time.
Arriving from Gdynia with 170 loaded containers, the vessel loaded 21 export containers from local companies including Carlsberg, Kemira, and Union Engineering.

To secure a fixed weekly feeder service, we committed to a minimum of 20 TEU per week — a significant challenge given the market conditions and the need to convince exporters to shift from trucking to Hamburg.

This inaugural call laid the foundation for what would later grow into one of Denmark’s most efficient and reliable feeder operations.

2. Gradual growth

Meeting the weekly commitment of 20 TEU was challenging at first. Local exporters had to be convinced to move from road transport to a new feeder solution.

Within a year and a half, the service had gained momentum. By 1999, Fredericia was handling 6,164 TEU, and the yard was expanded to 20,000 m² to match the growing volumes. Key customers such as Kemira, MD Foods, Merrild, JM/DK Skov and Tommerup played a central role in this early growth.

In 1998, Fredericia Shipping invested in a new container reach stacker, a DKK 2 million upgrade that strengthened handling capacity and modernised the terminal.

By 2000, Team Lines had increased to two weekly calls and the terminal handled 8,038 TEU, confirming that the feeder concept was commercially viable. In 2002, the Team Lines agency agreement was concluded as market conditions changed, closing the first chapter – but on a solid foundation for the strong, reliable operations that followed.

A MODERN TERMINAL

In February 2024, work began on a major expansion of the container terminal at Fredericia Port. The new facilities were officially inaugurated on 4 October 2025.

With the expansion, Fredericia Container Terminal now comprises 200,000 m² of operational area — including 150,000 m² with 485 metres of deep-water quay in Fredericia and 50,000 m² at our rail-connected terminal in Taulov, supported by three 600-metre tracks for efficient intermodal flows.

In parallel with these investments, container volumes reached new milestones. Fredericia handled 111,403 TEU in 2022, followed by another all-time high of 124,378 TEU in 2024. By end 2025, volumes had risen to approximately 165,000 TEU, underscoring both strong customer demand and the robustness of the feeder setup.

Today, Fredericia Shipping operates a modern and scalable terminal built on decades of experience, strategic investments, and long-standing partnerships — positioning Fredericia as a reliable hub for Northern European container logistics.

The next journey of Fredericia

In 2025, the next chapter for container operations in Fredericia began with the establishment of Fredericia Container Terminal A/S — a new joint company created to drive future growth and strengthen the region’s logistics position.

Fredericia Shipping holds a 60% majority stake, with APM Terminals (39%) and ADP (1%) as minority shareholders. The partnership combines Fredericia Shipping’s operational expertise with APM Terminals’ international know-how and ADP’s strategic infrastructure investments.

Fredericia Shipping remains an independent company and continues to lead all terminal operations, administration, and daily management. The joint company structure ensures the capacity, investment power, and international perspective needed to support future growth and to advance safety and operational standards across the region.
